Chinese tourists to Cambodia rising

The Cambodia Herald 21-08-13

Cambodia has witnessed a 55 percent increase in Chinese tourists in the first six months of this year, according to a report by the country's Ministry of Tourism on Monday.

Around 231,000 Chinese have visited the country during the first six months of 2013 compared to the 149,000 that had visited over the same period last year, the report showed.

The rise in Chinese tourists is mainly attributed to Cambodia's economic growth, the increase in direct flights, as well as the friendly relationship between the two countries.

The report also said that Cambodia received 2 million international visitors during the first six months of 2013 compared to 1.7 million in the same period last year.

The number of international visitors is expected to reach 4.1 million by the end of 2013, according to Tourism Minister, Thong Khon.

Siem Reap province, home to the World Heritage Site of Angkor Wat temple complex received the most visitors compared to other provinces.

The tourism sector last year, contributed 12 percent to the country's overall gross domestic product (GDP).

The 2012 figures showed that the country received 3.58 million foreign tourists, up 24 percent year-on-year, and generated a total revenue of about 2.2 billion U.S. dollars.

China is the third largest source for tourists after Vietnam and South Korea, according to the report.
