The Cambodia Herald – September 06, 2013

PHNOM PENH -- The Australian Embassy has issued a new warning to its citizens in Cambodia, saying that an opposition gathering planned for Saturday could turn violent.

"Cambodian authorities have established checkpoints around Phnom Penh to restrict traffic movements and boost security prior to the planned gathering of Cambodian National Rescue Party (CNRP) supporters in Freedom Park on 7 September," a statement said Friday.

The embassy added that authorities had advised that "passengers may be required to present identification and a reason for travelling to the city.

"Pay close attention to your personal security and monitor the media for information about possible new safety or security risks.

"You should avoid protests, demonstrations and political gatherings as they may turn violent," it said.

The embassy issued a similar warning on Wednesday but made no mention of possible violence.
