CC upholds NEC’s decision

The Cambodia Herald – September 04, 2013

PHNOM PENH -- The Constitutional Council upheld the decision of the National Election Committee (NEC) rejecting the request by the opposition party to recount the election ballots from the polling stations in Battambang province.

The Constitutional Council made their decision during Wednesday's hearing regarding the election complaints filed by the Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP).

The hearing led by Ek Sam Ol, Constitutional Council chairman, was attended by Suon Chamroeun, CNRP representatives, and defense lawyers Choung Chu Ngy and Keth Khi along with NEC official, Mean Sathi.

The CNRP recently asked the Constitutional Council to dismiss the NEC’s decision, and asked them to open the safety ballot boxes in order to verify with documents 1102 and 1108 as well as recounting the ballots from Battambang’s 116 voting stations.

"We filed complaints with the Constitutional Council because the CNRP could not accept the NEC’s decision as there were too many irregularities during the election,” said the defense lawyer for the CNRP.
